5 tips to kill being an online yoga student

1.     Forget about the screen

While it’s great to connect at the beginning of the class and actually see faces and people, looking at the screen during the class can cause tension in your neck and is even counter-indicated in most supine postures. So best is to listen to the verbal cues and avoid the screen as much as you can. And if you end up moving in a way which is yours and not what the teacher was saying it makes you own your practice which is very rewarding too.

2.     Plug the sound to your ears directly

At home or anywhere will be different from the peaceful atmosphere of a yoga studio. So plugging your class directly into your ears (I personally use my airpods which are one of the best purchase I made for years, I am not paid by Apple to write this!) will create a sacred space for you to find stillness and calm no matter what’s happening around.

3.     Test different spaces

While we all dream about outdoor classes, nature is not always the best place. It can be noisy, windy and internet wobbly! So best is to test different environments and find where you feel the most connected to your practice. And maybe depending on your mood, the time of the day you will practice at different places. Be in tune with your practice is what makes you grow.

4.     Be curious

Online yoga is the best opportunity to try out new type of yoga techniques. There is so much content online so would invite you to adopt a growth mindset. If there is a teacher you love, check out what they have tested recently and maybe give it a go. Yoga is so much more than what you already know, explore it!

5.     Find yourself an accountability buddy

Practicing online does not prevent you to get an accountability buddy so you can practice together and show-up on your mat despite feeling lazy. I personally have a WhatsApp group with some yogi buddies and we have a schedule. You feel less lonely when you wake up at 6am and honestly the energy flows beyond the screens.

Online learning is offering so many opportunities to feed your body and brain, and can easily be on the side of going back to your studio as well. To me it all comes to finding what works for you and enjoy the balance you would have found.
